BLCK
Johary hosted his second exhibition in November 2020 in Hong Kong, at the cross road of his life in Hong Kong and its African origins. The reflexion of this work came up from an observation:
Few black people live in Hong Kong. As per the thematic report on "Ethnic Minorities" published by the Censure and Statistics Department Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, it is hard to estimate the percentage of black people in Hong Kong. The report shows that the category "other" which “include Black, Latin American , etc." represents 0.6% of the population living in Hong Kong
The emergence of BLACK LIVE MATTER movement across the world
The name of the exhibition BLCK refer to the word black without the "a", to suggest a topic which would be taboo topic in Hong Kong society. However, the black community keep growing in Hong Kong years after years. The exhibition aims to invite people to think and question ourselves about our place and our behaviour within Hong Kong society.
People need to discuss, to exchange, to understand each other cultures in order to build a peaceful community and enhance the "vivre-ensemble"
"Vivre-ensemble" refers the idea in which all communities can live next to each other in harmony and respect.
